Nails infected with fungus or onychomycosis

can cause permanent deformity of the nail

Nail infection is a complex problem because it can start because of family susceptibility, increasing age, poor health, nail trauma, warm or moist climate.

It can also start due to infected nails exposure (sport/fitness and communal bathing areas) and tight shoes.

Can often have one or more of the following unsightly signs:

  • Yellow streaks in the skin under the nail (the nail bed) and on the underside of the nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of skin and nail fragments under the nail
  • Discolored and thickened nail that may be separate from the skin under the nail
  • Brittle, broken and thickened nail
  • White spots or streaks on the surface of the nail
  • Soft and powdery nail surface as the infection worsens
  • Damaged, crumbly and brown or grey nail surface with no separation of the nail from the underlying skin

NAIL INFECTION TREATMENT

Treatment is difficult because the infection is under and inside of the nail.

This makes it hard for treatment to reach and destroy the infection. In addition, even after successful treatment, many patients will experience re-occurrence of their nail infection.
